Volcanoes

B. Landforms from magma that doesn't reach the surface (these are referred to as intrusions)

Volcanic neck: formed when magma solidifies in pipe of volcano (Example: Ship Rock, New Mexico)

  1. Dike: tabular intrusion that cuts across layers of rock through which it moves (country rock).
  2. Sill: tabular intrusion that is parallel to layers of country rock.
  3. Batholith: large irregular intrusion [Outcrop areas > 40 mi2 (100 km2)]. A smaller intrusion of irregular shape is a called a stock.

V. Volcanoes in the Solar System

Active volcanism on Io (moon of Jupiter) and Triton (moon of Neptune)

Ancient volcanism: the Moon (maria - smooth plains of basalt), Venus (shield volcanoes and "pancake" domes), Mars (huge shield volcanoes; Olympus Mons is largest in solar system)
