Session
#2 Plate Tectonics Part II
Plate
Tectonics: The Driving Force
The theory of plate
tectonics provides Earth scientists with an extraordinarily successful
framework for understanding earthquakes, the uplift and erosion of mountains,
volcanoes, and most other aspects of earth sciences (tectonics refers
to processes that move solid rock). That is why we began in the last
session with an explanation of plate tectonics, and will continue today
with earthquakes and volcanoes.
You will note that this is not the order in which these topics are presented
in your textbooks. But it makes sense to usafter all, given the
movement of the plates, something is bound to erupt!
