Using a Stream Table

Presented by Lisa White
San Francisco State University

Lisa demonstrated the effective use of a stream table to illustrate erosion, transportation, and deposition. Click on any images to zoom in.

The teachers gathered around a long wooden box filled with sediment. The box was tilted toward the sink, from which a hose extended to the top of the stream table. (As shown at left.) This allowed us to adjust the water flow into the streambed.
A group of eager teachers cut the initial channels (left) but it took only minutes before the water was in control (right).
Banks were undercut, meandering patterns developed, and sediment was transported from the upper regions of the stream to be deposited in a perfect model of a delta. The finer sediments were carried further away from the banks, clouding the stream with suspended particles. (left)

The use and construction of stream tables is available through the Gems Guide: River Cutters (WL53200-16) and also the FOSS Landforms Module (PDF).
