Using
a Stream Table
Presented
by Lisa White

Lisa demonstrated the effective use of a stream table to illustrate
erosion, transportation, and deposition. Click on any images to zoom

The teachers gathered around a long wooden box filled with sediment.
The box was tilted toward the sink, from which a hose extended to
the top of the stream table. (As shown at left.) This allowed us
to adjust the water flow into the streambed. |

A
group of eager teachers cut the initial channels (left) but it took
only minutes before the water was in control (right). |
 |
Banks were undercut, meandering patterns developed, and sediment
was transported from the upper regions of the stream to be deposited
in a perfect model of a delta. The finer sediments were carried
further away from the banks, clouding the stream with suspended
particles. (left) |
The use and construction of stream tables is available through the
Gems
Guide: River Cutters (WL53200-16) and also the FOSS
Landforms Module (PDF).
