What's in a Sedimentary Rock?

Presented by Carol Tang
California Academy of Sciences

Modern ripples. The ripples are formed in a stream when the water moves over fine grained materials and builds these structures.

Cambrian-age ripplemarks. These ripples are about 500-million years old, yet they look the same as modern ones, and thus are interpreted to represent the same depositional conditions.
Triassic-age ripplemarks in cross-section (northern Arizona). Seeing the layers in the ripples allows one to reconstruct the direction of water flow.
Modern sand dunes (Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Utah).
