As noon (and the turn-around point) approached, the hikers paused to munch, relax, and take another look at topgraphic and geologic maps of the area.

At the shoreline, the group continued to explore, observe, and add to their field notes.
They saw marine mammals—frolicking in the water, and fossilized in the rocks (below, left)! Another interesting feature the group pondered was tafoni, formed by an unusual weathering process (below, center). Some teachers chose unusual sampling methods.
Finally...they headed for home.
