true or false? there is no such thing as a whelk shell with a left handed curl, they are all right-handed. Dunno, I've never been down under. A small shock, from the Apostle Peter's second epistle - to God one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years is as a day. Evidently someone in the early Church raised the question of the age of the fossil shells from Sicily. Kris McCormack, Wetumpka, Al.

eocene, paleocene, pleistocene, I can't ever remember the years. The more I look at ruins like the Mayan buildings in Yucatan and at Copan and Palenque, they couldn't have been built when the summertime temp. was 98 degrees. What if they are actually 20,000 years old and were built when there was two miles of glacier ice over Wisconsin upstate New York. Brooklyn, New York, was initially called Kings County but the other name, Brooklyn, means broken land in Dutch or something.

what a horrible forest fire in So. Cal. I saw this article about 5 years ago by some woman geologist-oceanographer, at UC San Diego or Santa Barbara - said they had dived in the ocean near Baja California, had found hydrothermal vents of hot water, presumably from crust or volcanic activity below the ocean. Seamount volcanos. Oregon and Washington has cone volcanoes all over the place. Should I believe the Bible when it says the earth is 6,000 years old or believe the geologist who says it is a million times 6,000 years old. I am going to try to believe both theories. Lord, what must I do to inherit eternal home construction? a wheelbarrow and a shovel.

Dear friends, I am a desperate mother looking for information for my son's homework. We need, urgently, information on dinosaur gestational periods. My son needs that for a school project he will hand in this Friday. He needs to know how long the embryo stayed inside the egg before cracking it to come out. The information may be about a specific species or an average one, it does not matter. We have looked everywhere but found nothing. Thank you so much. Your site is wonderful! Cecilia

canopy - or how the trees shade the ground and produce a 15 degree temp. difference underneath. I tried looking up the section on meteorology or weather in the Enc. Brit., they said there were not good weather records before 300-400 years ago but they thought there was some evidence of average temperatures oscillating thru periods of smaller amplitude and larger amplitude. I remember Hurricane Opal knocked over 3 large trees in my yard. The secret of the green thumb -water, water, water.

I just finished the high school level of the "Life has a History" exploration, and I'm completely in awe!!! What a job! Actually, there was one thing I really need to share, since it's related to one of my pet projects--helping prospective elementary teachers understand the process of science, rather than simply the "scientific method." At one point after having continued in the lab, Eddie presented three hypotheses on the chalkboard, and Celeste said something about needing to prove that the hypothesis is true!! I was in shock that this would appear in such a high quality project!! You redeemed yourselves well by the end, when both Eddie and Celeste clarify that science is a process, and that scientists don't run around trying to prove their hypotheses. Thanks for this powerful resource. My students will be here tomorrow, and I have high hopes that this is a resource that will make a real impact on how they view science when they teach it to children. I beg you to fix the misstatement by Celest!

Dear Folks at UCMP, I teach gifted Elementary School students, and use the glossary to provide the "last word" in definitions for our Vocab Word List. It would be a wonderful service if you could provide a pronunciation key, as a dictionary does, to help this poor teacher who struggles with an aging memory of her Biology labs in the 1960s at Boston College. I fear I may be passing on the wrong pronunciations to a whole generation of school children who would be better served if they learned the terms correctly the first time. We're knee-deep in Arthropods and some of the very specific biological names aren't found in a standard dictionary. Even the Biology books I use to prepare my lessons lack a pronunciation key. Perhaps there's a reference I might be able to access online...if so, I'd be grateful if you could pass it on. I do like this site and am very thankful to all of you who have contributed your knowledge and time to set it up. Thanking you for all your work, I remain sincerely, Karen Quinn

It is also a problem in building. Insulation. I have noticed that the temp. in summer under the canopy (cannapay) of my trees is 5-10 degrees cooler than in direct sunlight.

Over at http://goldpoint.topcities.com/ammonoids/ammonoids.html I've uploaded a new Web page, entitled, Middle Triassic Ammonoid Fossils From Nevada. It's all about the world-famous Middle Triassic Prida Formation locality in the Great Basin Desert of Nevada, a specific place that many cephalopod/ammonoid experts consider the single best late Anisian Stage (Middle Triassic, roughly 235 million years old) ammonoid locality in the world; lots of images of fossils, plus on-site images, as well. This is strictly a personal, noncommercial web page, by the way. Also included at the Web page are on-site images and images of fossil freshwater mollusks from the famous Upper Pleistocene Sehoo Formation, roughly 24 to 13 thousand years old--a fascinating badlands district in Nevada I like to visit whenever I'm headed to the Prida Formation Triassic ammonoid locality. The Sehoo records the abundant molluscan life of one of the last great pluvial lake systems (created primarily by rainfall) that existed in the Great Basin during the late Pleistocene age. By the way, if you have trouble accessing the web site, please try again later on; sometimes I exceed my allotted bandwidth for the day and my server simply shuts me down for a short spell.

Though I'd better do it again, as an update: Many thanks, UCMP, for including several of my fossils-related virtual field trips in your sections entitled, Localities Of The Pliocene Epoch, Localities Of The Miocene Epoch, and Localities Of The Eocene Epoch. To Christopher Callaghan: No, evolution on land did not have to start over again after the extinction of the dinosaurs, because not all lineages on land went extinct. Plants, mammals, amphibians, snails, and many others made it through the extinction. Please read https://ucmp.berkeley.edu/mesozoic/cretaceous/cretlife.html for more information.

babbling about some fossils somebody found in the John Day River valley in Oregon. Rising From the Plains, a biography of the geologist David Love in Wyoming - has this theory that the Rocky Mountains when first uplifted, were 28,000 feet high and the whole place was eroded down to an altitude of 14,000 feet - he claims several of Wyoming's rivers have carved down thru mountains, only if the entire basin had been built up with sediment first. Geology, makes you doubt your religion, until you see a dinosaur fossil skeleton that does not have a year on it. NASA has a picture of Yellowstone Park, claims there was a volcanic explosion there 2 million years ago that was 100 times bigger than Mt. St. Helens. Maybe that explains all the alkali powder.

I was watching a videotape from a city library, on marine biology. Some geologist was claiming they had parked a ship over the mid-Atlantic rift, and drilled cores of sediment from areas of the ocean bottom that were progressively further away from the rift, and when they did radioisotope dating on the rock, the age of the rock in the cores got progressively older the further away they got from the rift. She estimated the plates were spreading apart a few inches every 100 years. Tectonics, can we believe this? Fix your clock.

I was curious about Louis Agassiz, and found this website's biography of him, which on the whole, I thought excellent. Yet, I found it perplexing, even shocking, that no mention was made of his belief that blacks were by nature inferior to whites, and would never advance beyond that inferiority. I appreciate that even great thinkers operate within a context, and are limited in their thinking by that context, and believe too, that one cannot dismiss the fine work of great scientists, composers, artists, etc. because of some of their more heinous beliefs and behavior. Still, I think such beliefs should be mentioned in a biography; in Agassiz's case, he was a very influential man, so no doubt his racist theories affected the thinking of many. I would be interested to hear what you think about this.

I am a PhD student in Dr. David Porter's lab working on a particular clade within the Chytridiomycota and came across your site under the Fungi Systematics section. I just would like to point out that the Hyphochytrids are not true chytrids and belong in the heterokont grouping of protists along with Oomycetes, brown algae, and diatoms. You may also want to cite the frog chytrid, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, which has been implicated in frog die-offs and overall frog decline in your list of impacts for chytrids. Finally the url for the Zoosporic Fungi site has changed (http://www.botany.uga.edu/zoosporicfungi) and we are in the process of constructing a Chytrid Fungi Online website at http://www.botany.uga.edu/chytrid. I've just uploaded to http://sites.netscape.net/salinevalley1/mg/middlegate.html a new virtual field trip called Fossil Leaves And Seeds In West-Central Nevada. It's all about the wonderfully preserved 16-million-year-old leaves, seeds, conifer needles, seed pods and branchlets that can be found in the Middlegate Hills, roughly 50 miles east of Fallon. This is strictly a noncommercial, personal page, by the way.

This web site is fantastic! My 6th grade students are researching fossils as a part of our studies of ancient cultures. I love providing projects and reading that not necessarily geared towards little kids, so I've been surfing the net looking for resources. Your web site provides excellent information and detailed projects that look so exciting and don't "talk down" to students! I can't wait until we have web access in our classroom to better utilize resources such as your site. Thank you for the time and consideration you obviously placed in preparing this web site!

I just wanted to say how grateful I am to you guys for making this website so that I could find information about UCMP. I have been aspiring to become a paleontologist since I was three years of age, and I now believe that I have found the university that will help me get a degree in something I like to do. Although I am only 13 years old, I already am hoping to get accepted into UCMP and get a doctorate in paleontology so that I can use that knowledge to have a career in this field of science that I enjoy so much. Thanks again.

The tottaly unexpected quality and innovative approach found on your phylogenetic tree of life pages is quite breathtaking. For a biology student much more keen on "learning rather than studying", these pages offer a very complete learning basis. I must enfasise the Plantae systematics found there, most compreensive and interesting, and it would be even more interesting if the pages on Rhyniophyta and the Charales were already available. Congratulations.
