Getting Started

The purpose of Getting Into the Fossil Record is for students to gain a basic understanding of what a fossil is and the factors involved in becoming part of the fossil record.

Time Requirements

Teacher Preparation: 45-60 minutes to review the Teacher's Guide and Tour
Tour: ~50 minutes (dependent on student learning and reading levels)

Grade Level

There are two versions of Getting Into the Fossil Record.

Level One is written for grades 5-8.
Level Two is written for grades 9-12.

These recommendations are dependent on student learning and reading levels. Both levels address the same general concepts, however, Level Two contains greater detail and a more sophisticated vocabulary.

Preparation

We recommend that you follow these steps before using the module with your students.

3. Review the Standards aligned with the module.

4. Learn how to Navigate through the Tour.

5. Try out the student version of Getting Into the Fossil Record, (Level 1 or Level 2).
