Even if paleontologists look in areas likely to contain fossils, many fossils may never be found.

One of the reasons is that there is often a large area to search. Paleontologists must turn over many rocks, or dig in many areas to find the fossils that they do. It is not always an easy task, and many fossils remain undiscovered.
