Parent rocks shown from top left to right are: limestone, basalt and granite.

Middle row from left to right shows the sand-sized material generated from weathering of the parent rocks: sand with shell fragments, olivine (common mineral in basalt) sand, and quartz and feldspar-rich sand.

Bottom row shows what are often the final weathering products of igneous rocks basalt and granite, clay-rich soils that often show extensive oxidation of iron produced during the chemical weathering of the iron minerals.
