Mission Statement
The mission of the University of California Museum of Paleontology (UCMP) is to increase understanding of the past, present and future of life on Earth through research, education, and individual and community engagement. The mission of the UCMP’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) and Anti-racism Working Group is to promote a more diverse and inclusive present and future for the UCMP. To achieve its mission the Working Group will: 1) explore ways of increasing the efficacy of UCMP outreach programs, targeting a breadth of audiences including K-12 and community college student and teachers, undergraduate students on the Berkeley campus, and the greater public, to create opportunities for the exploration of life on Earth and to actively diversify our fields of study; 2) revise our educational materials and web resources to address the history and legacy of racism and colonialism in our fields, especially in the bio- and geo-sciences; and, 3) review the current climate within the UCMP community and create action items to continuously build a more inclusive environment and foster a sense of belonging. While these efforts are centered on changes within the UCMP, we also wish to support and reinforce similar efforts to address structural racism and injustice within the Department of Integrative Biology, the greater campus, and within the communities served by our institution more broadly.
