Desmostylus is, appropriately enough, a member of the desmostylia, a group considered to be related to sirenians or sea cows (manatees and dugongs). With their short tusks and shovel-jaws (see upper portion of the skull below right), they also resemble elephants. Fossil skeletons of desmostylians indicate that they were able to move around on land, perhaps to rest or mate. Find out more about desmostylians here.
